Setting the Record Straight

Misconceptions About Neon Signs

There are a lot of myths surrounding neon signs. We are here to bust them once and for all.

Myth 01

Neon signs are dangerous

Many people assume that because neon signs use high voltage transformers, they must be dangerous. In reality, modern neon sign transformers are designed with safety in mind and are no more hazardous than any other electrical appliance in your home or business.

Fact: All Neon Creations signs are built to UK electrical safety standards and come with a certified transformer. When installed correctly, they are completely safe for home and commercial use.
Myth 02

Neon signs are expensive to run

The idea that neon signs will send your electricity bill through the roof is a common misconception. In practice, a typical neon sign uses a surprisingly small amount of power — often less than a standard light bulb.

Fact: A typical neon sign uses between 3 and 5 watts per foot of tubing. A medium-sized home sign left on for 8 hours a day costs just a few pence per day to run.
Myth 03

LED signs are the same as real neon

With the rise of LED flex neon, many people assume it is essentially the same product. While LED neon can look similar in photos, there are significant differences in quality, character and longevity.

Fact: Real glass neon offers a 360-degree glow, a warm organic light quality and a craftsmanship that LED simply cannot replicate. Real neon also tends to last longer — often 10 years or more with normal use.
Myth 04

Neon signs are fragile and break easily

Glass neon tubing sounds delicate, but well-made neon signs are actually quite robust. Our signs are designed to withstand normal use in both home and commercial environments.

Fact: Our signs are carefully packaged for delivery and professionally mounted on sturdy backings. With normal care they will last for many years without any issues.
Myth 05

Neon signs are only for businesses

Neon was once predominantly associated with commercial signage — shops, bars and restaurants. Today, neon signs are one of the most popular home decor choices for bedrooms, living rooms, home bars and more.

Fact: A large and growing proportion of our orders are for personal home use. Neon signs make brilliant gifts and unique decorative features for any space.
Myth 06

You can only get neon in a few colours

Many people think neon only comes in red and blue. In fact, modern neon signs are available in a huge range of colours thanks to the use of different gas types and phosphor tube coatings.

Fact: We offer neon in white, warm white, red, pink, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple and more. View our full colour chart to see all available options.
