In today’s illuminated sign market, customers are often faced with a choice between neon and LED signage. At first glance, LED signs may seem like the obvious winner when it comes to price, but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.
There is no doubt that LED flex signs offer a lower-cost alternative to a neon sign. A custom made LED flex sign would usually be around half the price of a neon sign, with mass produced LED sign designs retailing for as little as £7. However, there are several good reasons why authentic neon signs come with a higher price tag — and why they’re often the better investment in the long run.
The True Cost of Craftsmanship
Real neon signs are handmade by skilled artisans who bend and shape glass tubes, which start out as a straight piece of glass, in a flame. There are different types of burners or lamps used depending on the type of bend required. This is not a mass-manufactured process and cannot be replicated by a machine.
Typically, it takes more than twice the amount of time to make the same design in neon, as it does in LED Flex, so neon signs have a much higher labour cost associated with them. There are many more steps involved in the process of making neon signs as there are with LED.
At Neon Creations, every neon sign we create is a unique piece of craftsmanship that requires:
In contrast, many low-cost LED flex signs — especially the extremely cheap ones sold in high street retail outlets and online marketplaces — are mass-produced. These are often imported from Asia or India, where large-scale production helps reduce costs, but also increases the environmental impact due to global shipping and less sustainable (and possibly ethical) manufacturing practices.
Unfortunately, both custom made LED and mass produced LED signs, are often marketed as “neon,” despite lacking the materials, processes, and authenticity of true neon signs. This creates confusion for consumers and unfair comparisons in the market.
Materials Make a Difference
Neon signs are made from glass tubes filled with inert gas like neon or argon. These gases create the iconic glow that can’t be replicated by LED. Neon emits light in 360 degrees, providing a soft, ambient glow that stands out in any environment.
LED signs, on the other hand, are typically made from PVC or silicone and emit light only from the front. The result? A flatter, often harsher look that lacks the warmth and character of real neon, and whilst they are half the price of neon, they are half the illumination.
Neon signs consist of more material components than LED, therefore making the material costs higher for neon too.
Longevity and Maintenance
High-quality neon signs can last for 10 to 15 years or more with proper care. They are durable, reliable, and built to last. We have even heard of neon signs lasting for 70 years! While LED signs may be cheaper upfront, they typically have a shorter lifespan (around 2 to 5 years), especially when made with lower-quality components.
Authenticity and Impact
There’s something undeniably special about a real neon sign. It carries a sense of tradition, artistry, and authenticity. When you invest in neon, you’re not just buying a sign — you’re preserving a craft, supporting skilled tradespeople, and adding timeless beauty to your space.
The Bottom Line
Yes, LED signs may be cheaper, and can look great when made by reputable manufacturers, and not every project is suitable for a neon solution. But neon signs offer something far more valuable: quality, character, and craftsmanship. If you’re looking for a truly bespoke piece that will stand out and last, neon is worth every penny.
