David Bowie: An Icon for Generations

January 14, 2016 2 min read

David Bowie is an icon for generations, there are no limitations on what he achieved, as a pioneering and influential performer of modern times, he defied labels and gave birth to new genres.

“And I’m floating in a most peculiar way. And the stars look very different today.”

We had the privilege of working with the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in 2013 on their “David Bowie is…” exhibition, for which we created the poignant “David Bowie is crossing the border” Neon Creation, as seen below.

The exhibition, which is now touring, is currently situated at The Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, features over 300 objects; including handwritten lyrics, photography, set designs, original costumes and so much more spanning five decades of an unbelievable career.

The V&A delved deep into the Bowie archive for the first time, to demonstrate how his work has both influenced, and been influenced by, wider movements in art, design, theatre and contemporary culture.

Following the announcement of his death, the museum announced they would be holding special screenings of the “David Bowie is happening now” film that accompanied the exhibition, this month.

A centre piece in the exhibition at the V&A was an “Aladdin Sane” neon sign that was created by the late Chris Bracey, the man behind God’s Own Junkyard.

His music evokes nostalgia for an era gone by, one where neon signs lit up city’s worldwide; it will be listened to, and enjoyed, for many years – even decades, to come.

“I don’t know where i’m going from here, but I know it won’t be boring.”

In light of such devastating news about one of the last true icons and pioneers of British music, here at Neon Creations, we’d like to offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of David Bowie.
