Capcom Games is best known for its hugely successful video games that the company has been releasing for years. In 2019, they are celebrating 40 years in the business; 4 decades of electronic games machines and games for the latest consoles. Its name is derived from ‘capsule’ and ‘computer’, and was established in 1979 with the view of developing and selling electronic games in Japan.
Within years of establishing its brand, Capcom Games were opening headquarters around the world; USA, UK and Asia included. Beginning in arcade video games, the company continued to evolve and branch out into games for consoles including Nintendo Entertainment System, PlayStation and Xbox.
Capcom Games created best-selling and record-breaking games including Devil May Cry, Street Fighter and Resident Evil. It has been recently confirmed that the company are continuing to work on numerous titles.
It was 1983 when Capcom released their first originally developed coin-op game, called Little League. Many more followed in quick succession, before moving to arcade video games like Vulgus, 1942 and Ghosts’n Goblins. Within a decade, Capcom Games have a strong reputation for successful arcade video games, but times were changing and Capcom needed to demonstrate that it could evolve and adapt to changing technology.
In 1996, Capcom released Resident Evil for PlayStation. Not only was this a pioneering moment in the company expanding beyond arcade games, but it established a gripping survival horror genre within the gaming industry.
Capcom Games inspired wider creativity that went beyond its video games. There have been a hugely successful range of Hollywood films inspired by Resident Evil; 6 Resident Evil films were created between 2002 and 2016.
